Sri Lanka: Amnesty International calls for urgent action to protect civilians

Amnesty International is alarmed that escalating fighting in Sri Lanka has resulted in the death and injury of scores of civilians, the displacement of more than 160,000 people, and the destruction of homes, schools, and places of worship. The organisation is dismayed that neither the government security forces nor the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) appear to be taking adequate precautions to protect civilian lives.

PSM rejection a blow to freedom of association

Amnesty International Malaysia regrets the decision of the Court of Appeal’s to uphold the High Court ruling to reject Parti Socialist Malaysia’s (PSM) application to be a registered as a political party. The decision is serious blow to the notion of freedom of association in Malaysia which is a fundamental right guaranteed in Article 20 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and Part II of the Malaysian Constitution

Israel: IDF inquiry into Qana a whitewash

ImageThe investigation carried out by the Israeli Defence Force (IDF) into the air-missile attack on Qana was clearly inadequate and reinforces the need for the urgent dispatch of the International Humanitarian Fact-Finding Commission (IHFFC).

We cannot allow any investigation into the events in Qana to be a whitewash. What is needed here is an independent investigation which can look at all credible reports of serious violations of international humanitarian law taking place in this conflict.
