Malaysia: Local councils must respect human rights standards and due process

Amnesty International Malaysia condemns the recently reported incident of forced evictions at Kampung Berembang, Ampang and Kampung Rimba Jaya, Klang on the 5th and 6th of March, 2007 by local council enforcement authorities. We believe the evictions were done in an arbitrary manner disregarding human rights concerns as well as the judicial process as both the cases are still pending in court.

Sudan: Application for summonses for two war crimes suspects a significant step towards justice

Amnesty International said that today's application by the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC) to issue summonses to two people suspected of crimes against humanity and war crimes in Darfur was a small but significant step towards securing justice for the millions of victims of these crimes in Darfur.

Migrant workers should have the right to freedom of movement

Migrant workers have the right to liberty and security; to equality before the law without discrimination, the right to freedom of movement as well as to the presumption of innocence. This pre-emptive measure to restrict the movement of migrants as itself a human rights violation and a form of punishment made out of mere suspicion of guilt.

Indonesia: Government failing exploited domestic workers

Image Domestic workers in Indonesia face withheld wages, working days of up to 22 hours, beatings, sexual violence and forced confinement, according to a new report released by Amnesty International. Moves by the government to address the problem are falling short, leaving millions of women vulnerable to abusive employers.

Amnesty International Malaysia deeply regrets the statement made by Home Affairs Minister Datuk Seri Radzi Sheikh Ahmad criticizing the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR). The statement made by the Minister is a gross disregard to international human rights and humanitarian principles and unbecoming of a United Nations (UN) Human Rights Council member.
