On October 10th, 2007, the World Day against the Death Penalty will focus on the proposed UN General Assembly resolution for a universal moratorium on executions.

The proposal would save lives and give the population of retentionist states an opportunity to see for themselves that a pause in death sentences does not lead to higher crime rates.

UK: Extension of pre-charge detention amounts to internment

Amnesty International condemns the UK government's proposal to extend the period for which people can be detained under terrorism legislation by the police to 56 days.  It will further alienate affected communities, leading people to mistrust the authorities and make them less likely to want to cooperate with the police.
