Three activists released in Malaysia

The Malaysian authorities released three human rights activists from the Hindu Rights Action Force (HINDRAF) on Saturday 9 May. The three men were among a group of five HINDRAF activists arrested and detained under the Internal Security Act (ISA) in December 2007 for organizing protest rallies without a permit. Two of them were released on 5 April 2009.

Malaysia: Stop prosecution of bloggers charged with insulting Sultan

The Malaysian government should stop persecuting six bloggers charged today for comments criticizing a Malaysian Sultan, Amnesty International said today. One of the bloggers has already pleaded guilty and been fined, while the five others face charges in Kuala Lumpur under the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.

Amnesty International Malaysia views with concern the statement made by Deputy IGP Tan Sri Ismail Omar on 23.2.09 on the relevance of the Internal Security Act 1960 (ISA). Amnesty regrets that the Deputy IGP being the guardian of public interest and rights had given blanket approval to the most draconian and unjust law in Malaysia.

Comprehensive reform needed for policing in Malaysia

Amnesty International Malaysia welcomes the initiative taken by the Royal Malaysian Police to introduce new Standing Operating Procedure (SOP) on arrest and questioning of detainees as reported in media on February 19, 2008. Amnesty views the initiative taken as positive step to address critical reforms needed on policing in Malaysia and ensure compliance with the criminal procedure code and rule of law.
