Listening to the news can be unsettling. You may feel anxious or helpless when you hear about the inhumanity in the world. But you don't have to feel this way.
With AI, you can do something positive. With the help of our members and volunteers, thousands of prisoners have been released and helped since 1961. When you join Amnesty International you join a worldwide movement of people who are united by desire to protect and promote human rights. By donating to Amnesty International, you help the organisation continue its work and ensure its financial independence. Amnesty International is an international grassroots movement. Much of our work is done by volunteers. We have volunteers who help plan and organise campaigns, volunteers who assist the office and volunteers who organise and run local groups. Local Groups Local groups are community-based groups of volunteers who work as a team for the promotion of human rights. They write letters, circulate petitions, and table at public events. They are the representatives of Amnesty International in their communities. An appeal from you to the authorities can help the victims of human rights violations whose stories are told here. You can help free a prisoner of conscience or stop torture. You can bring liberty to a victim of "disappearance". You may prevent an execution. Every appeal counts. Amnesty International's global Urgent Action Network (UAN) provides an effective and rapid means of preventing some of the most life-threatening human rights violations against individuals. Over the past 30 years, UAN members have helped to save thousands of lives by stopping torture, preventing executions and protecting human rights defenders.
